Lighting is the single most transformative electrical upgrade you can make. Good lighting changes how a room feels, how a shop sells, how a home flows from day into evening. We handle the design, the supply, and the install — with every circuit certified to BS 7671.
Kitchens, living rooms, stairwells, bedrooms, bathrooms, hallways -- every room in the house needs a different approach. We work through task lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting and decorative lighting as a single scheme rather than bolting on downlights as an afterthought. Dimmable circuits, scene control, tunable white LEDs, feature pendants, under-cabinet strips and backlit mirrors. Fully compliant with IP44/IP65 requirements in bathroom zones and Part L of the Building Regulations for domestic lighting efficacy.
Glastonbury, Wells, Bath, Bruton -- Mid Somerset is full of listed buildings, barn conversions and period homes where the last thing you want is a grid of 65mm downlights. We restore original brass lanterns, rewire period pendants, hide modern LED drivers inside traditional fittings, and work around lath-and-plaster ceilings, timber beams, and stone walls without hacking them to pieces. Where heritage permission is required we liaise with the local authority conservation officer.
Shops, salons, barbershops, restaurants, showrooms, offices. Commercial lighting has to do three jobs at once: make the product look right, make the staff see clearly, and run cheap. We specify track lighting (Erco, Nordlux, Astro), high-CRI LED for retail, DALI-2 and Casambi control systems for scene switching, and CIBSE-compliant office lighting with correct lux levels at desk height. Emergency lighting to BS 5266 is designed in as standard -- not bolted on at building-control sign-off.
Restaurants and pubs need the light level to drop from lunch service to evening dining. Hotels need guest rooms that feel calm by day and warm by night. We install multi-scene dimming controls (Lutron, Rako, Helvar), wireless retrofit systems for listed buildings, and colour-temperature-tunable schemes that shift the room automatically from bright midday white through to warm candlelight at 1800K in the evening. Fully integrated with sound, AV and HVAC systems where required.
Driveways, gardens, water features, facade uplighting, step lights and path markers. External lighting has to survive Somerset winters, meaning IP65 minimum, stainless or marine-grade fittings, and properly buried SWA cable rather than flex pushed through a hole. We use 24V DC transformer-fed systems for low-voltage garden installs (no earthing complexity, no RCD nuisance tripping) and mains IP67 fittings for driveways and security lighting. PIR, daylight sensor, and astronomical-clock control to avoid daytime operation.
Beyond basic smart bulbs: proper whole-house control systems where you can recall scenes, schedule automations by sunset, integrate with Alexa / Google / HomeKit, and actually have the lights work when the Wi-Fi drops. We install Lutron Caseta and RA2 Select, Rako wired and wireless, Casambi Bluetooth mesh, Loxone, Shelly, and DALI broadcast. Panel-mounted scene keypads rather than phone-only control -- because no one wants to hunt for an app to turn the lights off.
Under-cabinet, cove, stair nosing, shelf, wardrobe, plinth, pelmet, skirting. Strip lighting done badly is splotchy, green-cast, flickers, and dies after 18 months. Done right it disappears and the light appears to come from nowhere. We use CRI90+ / CRI95 tape from specified brands (Collingwood, KSR, Nordlux), run it on properly sized constant-voltage drivers, heatsink aluminium profiles, and use soft-start dimming to prevent flicker at low levels. Every run tested with a luxmeter before sign-off.
Required in all commercial premises, public-access buildings, HMOs, flats above shops, and many larger houses. We design and install self-contained and central-battery emergency lighting systems compliant with BS 5266-1:2016: maintained and non-maintained illuminated exit signs, escape route lighting, open-area anti-panic lighting, and high-risk-task lighting. Integrated alongside BS 5839 fire alarm systems where required. Monthly function and annual 3-hour duration tests delivered as a contracted service. All certificates logged for your fire risk assessment and insurance.
We are not tied to any one supplier, which means we specify what is right for the job rather than what is on offer this month. Regular specs include:
Somerset barn conversion: discreet LED downlights between the beams, pendants over the island, and a scene-controlled evening mode via Rako. Old building, new lighting language.
