Fibre Optic

Terminated.
Spliced. Certified.

Fibre optic installation is not a bolt-on to standard sparky work. It needs dedicated kit, proper training and a clean working method. Our fibre qualifications come from City & Guilds. We fusion splice with Fujikura equipment, OTDR-test every run, and issue Fluke channel certification as standard. The work is signed off to the same BS EN 50173 standards the big datacomm installers use.

01 Qualifications & Certification

Our installing team holds City & Guilds Level 3 Fibre Optic Installation (3667). That covers design principles, termination methods, fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, and testing to BS EN 50173 / ISO 11801 standards. Every fibre run is certified with a Fluke MultiFiber Pro or equivalent channel tester and the certificate is supplied to you as a PDF.

02 Multimode (OM3 / OM4 / OM5)

OM3 (aqua): 10 Gbps up to 300m. Standard for in-building backbone.

OM4 (aqua or violet): 10 Gbps up to 400m, 40/100 Gbps up to 150m. The modern default for new-build commercial.

OM5 (lime): Wideband multimode supporting up to 40/100 Gbps via SWDM. Specified for data centres and future-proofed backbones.

We pull, fusion-splice, and terminate LC / SC / MTP-MPO connectors as specified.

03 Singlemode (OS1 / OS2)

OS1: Indoor-rated, typical for tight-buffered patch panels.

OS2: The standard for outdoor and campus. Low loss, long-distance. 10/40/100 Gbps over tens of kilometres.

Singlemode is the right choice for inter-building links, site-to-site fibre runs, and any connection longer than about 400m. We install OS2 in loose-tube armoured cable for outdoor routes and tight-buffered for internal patching.

04 Fusion Splicing

Fujikura FSM-series active-alignment fusion splicer. Sub-0.05 dB typical splice loss on singlemode, 0.02 dB on multimode. Far lower insertion loss than mechanical splicing or pre-terminated patch cables, and essential for long-distance OS2 runs where every fraction of a dB of budget matters.

Every splice protected with a heat-shrink sleeve and housed in a splice tray inside the patch panel or break-out enclosure.

05 OTDR Testing

Optical Time Domain Reflectometer testing identifies the exact position, loss, and reflectance of every splice, connector and fibre bend in the run. We test from both ends on multimode (bidirectional averaging per TIA-526-14) and at multiple wavelengths on singlemode (1310 nm and 1550 nm per ITU-T G.652).

OTDR traces are supplied as part of the handover pack so you have a baseline for any future fault diagnosis.

06 Patch Panels & Enclosures

1U and 2U rack-mount panels for comms cabinets, wall-mount enclosures for smaller installs, break-out boxes for direct-to-equipment termination. LC duplex is the current standard for most equipment; SC for older installs; MTP-MPO for high-density data centre use. We supply and install from ADC, Corning, Nexans, Hellermann and AMP Commscope.

07 Cable Types We Install

  • Tight-buffered indoor fibre for in-building runs and patch panel terminations
  • Loose-tube armoured for external runs, direct buried, and duct-laid fibre
  • Aerial fibre with dielectric self-supporting (ADSS) for pole-mounted runs between buildings
  • Plenum / LSZH rated for air-handling spaces and fire-sensitive environments (hospitals, care homes, high-rise)
  • Armoured indoor/outdoor for routes that cross between internal and external environments without additional splice points

08 Where We Install

  • Office fit-outs: riser backbone, floor distribution, user patching
  • Commercial buildings: inter-floor backbone, comms-room feeds
  • Campus sites: building-to-building singlemode backbones, typically direct-buried OS2
  • Hotels & care homes: backbone between comms rooms and floor switches, fibre to access points for high-density Wi-Fi
  • Industrial: PLC and SCADA links, machine-to-panel fibre in noisy EMI environments
  • Retail & hospitality: fibre-to-the-desk where bandwidth or noise-immunity demands it

09 Testing & Documentation

Every installation is documented and certified. You get:

  • Channel loss test results against TIA-568 / ISO 11801 limits
  • Bidirectional OTDR traces at 1310/1550 nm (singlemode) or 850/1300 nm (multimode)
  • End-face inspection images for every connector (no contamination, no cracks)
  • Patch schedule with port-to-port mapping
  • Fibre label schedule matched to physical labels on every connector
  • As-built drawings showing cable routing and splice locations

10 Fault Finding & Repair

Broken fibre? High loss on an existing run? Commissioning a new link that won’t come up? We do reactive fibre work:

  • OTDR fault location for breaks, bends, or excess-loss connectors
  • End-face inspection and cleaning
  • On-site splice repair (cut in the middle and splice, or replace pigtails)
  • Full recertification after repair

Call-out within 24 hours across Mid Somerset for commercial and campus sites.
