Why Battery Storage

Take Control of
Your Energy

The UK energy market has changed. Smart homeowners are taking control.

Store Solar Energy

Without a battery, a typical solar home self-consumes only 30-50% of generation — the rest is exported at 4-15p/kWh. With battery storage, self-consumption rises to 70-85%. You use your own solar power in the evening instead of buying it back from the grid at 24.5p/kWh. The saving is immediate and significant.

Time-of-Use Tariff Arbitrage

On tariffs like Octopus Go (7.5p/kWh overnight), Intelligent Go, or Agile, charge your battery at rock-bottom overnight rates and discharge during peak hours (24.5p+). A 9.5kWh battery cycling daily between cheap and peak rates saves approximately £600-£900 per year on electricity alone, even without solar panels.

Emergency Backup Power (EPS)

Systems with Emergency Power Supply (EPS) functionality keep essential circuits running during grid outages. GivEnergy EPS switches over in under 20ms. Tesla Powerwall provides seamless whole-home backup via Gateway 2. We configure your backup circuits during installation — typically covering lights, fridge-freezer, broadband router, and phone chargers.

Export and Earn via SEG

With the Smart Export Guarantee, sell excess stored energy back to the grid at 4-15p/kWh depending on your supplier. Some advanced tariffs like Octopus Flux pay premium export rates during peak demand windows (15-20p/kWh). Your battery becomes an active revenue source, not just a storage device.

Future-Proof Investment

UK energy prices have risen 54% since 2021 and show no sign of stabilising. As time-of-use tariffs become the default (the smart meter rollout is driving this), battery storage becomes more valuable every year. LFP batteries are rated for 6,000+ cycles (approximately 15-20 years of daily use), meaning your investment outlasts multiple energy price cycles.

Zero VAT (with Solar)

Battery storage installed alongside solar PV, or retrofitted to an existing solar system, qualifies for 0% VAT under the Energy Technology Criteria List. This applies to residential properties only. Standalone batteries without solar are subject to 20% VAT. We can advise on the most tax-efficient installation approach for your situation.

How It Works

Battery Storage
Technical Guide

Understanding the technology helps you choose the right system. Here is what matters.

DC-Coupled vs AC-Coupled

DC-coupled systems (GivEnergy, Fox ESS, SolarEdge) connect the battery directly to the solar panels via a hybrid inverter. Solar DC power charges the battery without converting to AC first, giving higher efficiency (typically 95-97%). Best for new solar + battery installations.

AC-coupled systems (Tesla Powerwall) connect to your existing AC circuit. Solar panels still use their existing inverter. The battery has its own built-in inverter. Slightly lower round-trip efficiency (88-92%) but ideal for retrofitting to existing solar without replacing the inverter.

Hybrid Inverters Explained

A hybrid inverter performs two jobs: it converts solar DC power to AC for your home, AND it manages battery charging and discharging. This replaces the need for a separate solar inverter and battery inverter, reducing cost and complexity.

GivEnergy, Fox ESS, and SolarEdge all use hybrid inverters. The inverter continuously monitors solar generation, household demand, battery state of charge, and grid conditions — making real-time decisions about where to route power for maximum savings.

LFP vs NMC Chemistry

LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) is now the standard for home batteries. Advantages: 6,000+ cycles (vs 3,000 for NMC), zero thermal runaway risk, no cobalt, wider operating temperature range, and longer warranty periods. All systems we install use LFP chemistry.

NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) was common in older systems but is being phased out for residential use due to shorter lifespan and thermal management requirements.

Installation Requirements

Batteries must be installed on a structurally sound wall or floor (GivEnergy: 114kg, Tesla: 114kg). Minimum ventilation clearances must be maintained per manufacturer specifications (typically 150mm on all sides). Operating temperature range varies by product — most are rated for garages and outbuildings but some require protection from sustained sub-zero temperatures.

Electrical requirements: dedicated circuit from consumer unit, appropriate RCD protection, and DNO notification for systems with export capability. We handle all of this as part of the installation.

ROI & Payback Calculations

Solar + battery: Typical payback 5-8 years. A 9.5kWh battery paired with a 4kW solar array saves approximately £800-£1,200 per year through increased self-consumption and tariff arbitrage. System cost of £4,500-£5,500 pays back in 4-7 years.

Standalone battery (no solar): Typical payback 6-9 years. Pure tariff arbitrage on Octopus Go saves approximately £600-£900 per year. Rising energy prices shorten the payback period each year.

Warranty Coverage

GivEnergy: 12 years covering battery capacity retention above 80% and all components. Unlimited cycles within warranty period.

Tesla: 10 years, unlimited cycles, minimum 70% capacity retention. Gateway 2 covered under same warranty.

BYD: 10 years, 6,000 cycles, minimum 80% capacity.

Fox ESS: 10 years on battery and inverter, 6,000 cycles.

All installations also carry our 12-month workmanship guarantee and are registered with NAPIT for Part P compliance.

Commercial

Business Battery
Storage

Commercial battery storage delivers immediate cost savings through peak shaving, demand management, and backup power — often with better ROI than residential systems.

Peak Shaving

Reduce Maximum Demand Charges

Many commercial electricity contracts include maximum demand charges (kVA). Battery storage discharges during peak demand periods to flatten your load profile, reducing your maximum demand charge by 20-40%. For businesses paying £30-50/kVA/month, this alone can justify the investment.

Backup Power

UPS Replacement

Commercial battery systems with EPS functionality provide seamless backup power for critical infrastructure: servers, EPOS systems, refrigeration, security systems, and emergency lighting. More cost-effective and longer-lasting than traditional UPS systems, with the added benefit of daily energy savings.

Solar Integration

Maximise Commercial Solar ROI

Commercial premises typically operate 8-12 hours per day but solar generates for 6-10 hours. Battery storage captures surplus weekend and early morning generation, increasing solar self-consumption from 40% to 80%+. Combined with business rates relief on solar (up to 100% exemption), the financial case is compelling.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Do I need solar panels to have a battery?
No. A battery works standalone by charging from cheap overnight electricity (e.g., Octopus Go at 7.5p/kWh) and discharging during expensive peak hours. However, batteries paired with solar give the best savings.
How long does installation take?
Most residential battery installations are completed in one day. If combined with a solar installation, allow 2-3 days for the complete system.
What's the payback period?
Typically 5-7 years depending on your energy usage, tariff, and whether you have solar. With solar + battery on a smart tariff, some customers see payback in under 5 years.
Will it work during a power cut?
Systems with backup functionality (like Tesla Powerwall or GivEnergy with EPS) will keep essential circuits running during a power cut. We configure this during installation.
Is there VAT on battery storage?
Battery storage installed alongside solar PV, or retrofitted to an existing solar system, qualifies for 0% VAT under current UK rules. Standalone batteries without solar are subject to 20% VAT.
What warranty do I get?
All systems come with manufacturer warranties (10-12 years depending on brand) plus our own 12-month workmanship guarantee. LFP batteries are rated for 6,000+ charge cycles.
